Happy Labor Day

It is not just about football season starting…

Labor Day: What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Enjoy your holiday!

Memorial Day – A Normal Holiday?

I hesitate to use the word “normal”, but this weekend feels good!  It is our first real holiday since New Year’s Day of 2020.

Yes, it is about the start of the summer, with beer, BBQ and upcoming coming trips to the beach.  There is baseball, watermelon and the kids being out of school. Many of these things are happening live and in person this year. But, please do not forget the true meaning of the holiday.  People have died serving our country and defending the freedoms we enjoy. This day is set aside to remember and honor those sacrifices.  Take a minute to think about that.  Make sure your children or grandchildren understand the price of freedom and the reason for the holiday. It is great to see things normalizing. Just make sure that acknowledging the meaning of the holiday is part of your “normal”.

Have a blessed and happy Memorial Day!

I know things are different this year, but it is still the Christmas holiday season. May you and your family have a truly blessed Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

The MMM will take off next week for the holidays and return on Monday, January 4th of 2021.  What are your plans to make 2021 great?

Thanksgiving 2020 in Perspective

Here we are headed into another major holiday still under the “wet blanket feeling” of the pandemic. This holiday, and Christmas soon to follow, will certainly look and feel different.    We may not be able spend time with loved ones like normal, nor will we have the excitement of public gatherings that we enjoy during the holiday season. We might be  lonely or feeling depressed. Possibly we are frustrated and overwhelmed. Whatever the case, it will be a different and potentially challenging holiday season.

As tough as things may seem, let’s keep things in perspective.  We are still blessed.   If you woke up this morning in good health with a roof over your head, you should be thankful.  If you and your family know you will  have three meals today, be grateful.  If you have the ability to see and read this message, don’t take that for granted.  If you have family and friends who love you, even though you might not get to hug them this Thursday, you are blessed.  If you have all of these things you are in a very small percentage of the world from a wealth and comfort perspective.  We may not get the holidays that we are used to, but we are blessed and should remain grateful for the things we have. Consider the real meaning of Thanksgiving and maintain perspective.  Happy Thanksgiving

Memorial Day

I remember the first time I saw Arlington Cemetery in person.  What an impressive sight.  Rows and rows of crosses indicating lives lost in defense of the freedoms we enjoy.  Then there is the Vietnam Memorial, another monument to valiant lives lost in defense of this great country.  We often take our freedoms and liberties for granted, we shouldn’t.  Too many countries in this world have no such freedom or liberty.  Ours is not without its’ costs.  Military families don’t take our freedom as US citizens so lightly.  They know all too well the costs. It is a shame that we need monuments, crosses and holidays to remember and pay tribute.   Don’t let the true meaning of Memorial Day go unnoticed.  If you need a tangible reminder google some pictures of Arlington Cemetery or the Vietnam Memorial.  They are poignant reminders of our fallen heroes along with many sights in our capital and all over this great land.  We really should not ever forget!

Have a blessed Memorial Day holiday!

Holiday Season Leadership

The holidays represent a great opportunity for each of us as leaders.  Not as a political leadership occasion or a chance to excel in a leadership role at work, but the holidays are full of “lead by example” opportunities at home.

·         Christ like love can be shown for our family and others
·         Materialism can be de-emphasized (not the normal thought at Christmas)
·         Tithing and charitable giving can be taught
·         Patience can be exemplified (long checkout lines, full parking lots and traffic)
·         Understanding and flexibility can be displayed in family gatherings
·         Giving can be emphasized
·         Good sportsmanship can be demonstrated during football and card games
·         Prayer can be a focus
·         Lessons can be learned from those less fortunate

Our families and those around us during the holidays can learn so much by watching our behavior as leaders.  Embrace your leadership opportunities this holiday season!

The MMM will take a brief holiday break. Watch for our return on Monday January 8th, 2018.  Wow, I cannot believe how this year has flown by!  Be a blessing this Christmas!

Happy Memorial Day!

Freedom is not free.  It may be an overused statement but it is totally true and so appropriate to remember on Memorial Day.  Don’t forget the meaning of the holiday and make sure that your kids and grandkids are aware of it as well.  We live in a great country but a lot of lives have been lost for our freedom.  Just remember that as you enjoy the day and welcome the summer!

Have a blessed holiday…

Happy New Year!

It is 2016!  What are your goals for the year?  I have two simple questions for you…

  1. What will you do to grow, change, challenge and improve yourself this year?

  1. What will you do to positively impact those around you in 2016?

Think about it!

Merry Christmas!

Wise mean still seek Him!  And we know from the MMM that we are always seeking wisdom, right?  May you and your family have a truly blessed Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

The MMM will take one week off and return on Monday January 4th of 2016.  How about those New Year resolutions?

Beginnings

The Monday Morning Minute was born eleven years ago this week.  It began as an encouraging internal communication at Fleetwood Retail Corp., a former employer that that is long since gone.  Since then it has grown to a more widely distributed communication where I try to start the week with a challenging or encouraging thought.  People need a jump start on Monday morning to get back into a work mode.  We all need some reminder about our leadership roles in life as we begin each week.  More importantly, we must continuously learn and grow.  Some of you have been along for the ride from the very beginning, others have joined more recently.  Many of you I know, some of you I do not.  Whatever the case, I hope you get a little something from my shared thoughts each Monday morning.  I hope that you gain at least a slightly different perspective for your week.  I look forward to many Monday Morning Minutes to come…

Have a blessed Thanksgiving!
