Crisis

Last week we talked about true leaders emerging during a crisis. There can, and should, be other positive outcomes from times of crisis. Our challenges should always lead to lessons learned, changes made, and improvements in our lives.

If we are not growing through what we are going through, we are missing huge opportunities. This is true of both business and personal challenges. Think about this…

A good crisis is a terrible thing to waste!

Leadership

Many people can lead in times of stability. It is times of crisis where things change. True leaders emerge during challenging times. The status quo is not demanding on leaders. Pressure situations are demanding.

In times of trouble, people don’t follow a plan, they follow a leader.

Think about it…

Complain or…

For some reason we seem to have come to a place where complaining is accepted.  All too often we play the victim, blame others, point fingers and gripe. The fact that we complain implies that we think the circumstances are someone else’s fault and out of our control. That may be the case. However, the complaint itself is unlikely to change anything.  There are alternatives to complaining.

Next time you feel the need to complain, consider the impact of that.  What will be accomplished by complaining?  More importantly consider your options.  Might it be best to just remove yourself from the matter?  Are there ways you can take the initiative to change and improve the circumstances?  Maybe it is a battle not worth fighting and an act of quiet acceptance is in order.  Be productive or be quiet!

“When you complain you make yourself a victim.  Either leave the situation, change the situation or accept it.”

How Did You Do?

This Saturday, March 11th, is the three year anniversary of both the NBA and the Houston Rodeo shutting down entirely dur to COVID.  Those two events were just the tip of the iceberg.  Our world has been changed forever.  But there is opportunity in change.  The below MMM was written about a month into the Shutdown.

How did you do with the questions and opportunities listed below?

Coming out of this better…

There is a lot of commentary out there on how things will be different after COVID-19.  Certainly, we are learning what we miss the most and what we deem to be really important.  Discovering creative ways to work from home and how to be flexible are daily challenges.  Of course, we are also being reminded of the importance of health care workers, first responders, truck drivers and grocery store staff.  Oh, and maybe most importantly, Teachers!

But what are you doing to come out of this a better person?

·        Are you going to have better family relationships?

·        Will you learn a new craft or skill?

·        Are you growing in your faith?

·        Have you discovered new ways to give back in your community?

·        Will you be more serious about saving of 2-3 months of living expenses?

·        Has your perspective about work/life balance changed?

·        Do you have new goals and objectives for the balance of the year?

·        Will you bring a new level of commitment and energy to your job or your business?

·        Have you read a business or self help book you have been putting off?

This is not over, but most of the above take some time.  Take advantage of the opportunity of time. What are you doing to make sure you come out of this a better person? Think about it.
